In 1980, Maoist fighters established themselves in the Dandakaranya forest as a “rear area” following a defeat in 1972. The forest provided a hiding place and was chosen by Kondapalli Sitaramaiah. The Maoists believed the forest was not suitable for revolution but aimed to develop it in their favor.

The district of Bastar, once known for its beauty and vibrant culture, has suffered significant devastation and violence due to the long-standing Maoist insurgency. The local people have become victims, facing tragic loss, displacement, and abuse.
